Broken Braces & Wire Repair
A wire poking your cheek or a bracket coming loose can make braces uncomfortable. Contact the clinician managing your orthodontic treatment first. They can advise how soon you need to be seen.
If you cannot reach them and need help with discomfort, ask a local dental clinic whether it can assess the problem. Confirm what care it can provide before booking.
What needs checking?
Explain what has changed and where it is causing trouble. The next step depends on which part is damaged and whether it is hurting you.
Wire poking the cheek or gum
Tell the clinic where the wire is rubbing and whether orthodontic wax makes it comfortable. Ask whether it needs professional adjustment.
Wire has come out
A wire can slip out of the tube on a back tooth. Contact your treating clinic for advice, particularly if the loose end is painful.
Broken or loose bracket
A bracket may detach from the tooth while remaining on the wire. Let your treating clinic know so it can arrange the appropriate repair.
Who should repair your braces?
Start with the orthodontist or dentist responsible for your braces. They know your appliance and treatment plan.
If they are unavailable, a local dentist may be able to assess irritation and provide temporary help. This does not necessarily include replacing a bracket or completing an orthodontic adjustment.
Ask what the clinic can do for your particular problem. Any temporary care should be followed up with your usual orthodontic provider.
Orthodontic wax and temporary comfort
Orthodontic relief wax can form a cushion over a part of the brace that is rubbing. Use it as directed by your orthodontic team or the product instructions.
- Choose softer foods and avoid hard or sticky foods that could damage the brace further.
- Continue cleaning carefully around your teeth and braces.
- Contact your treating clinic if the wax does not make the area comfortable.
Wax provides temporary protection; it does not repair a broken wire or reattach a bracket. Get individual advice before attempting to cut, bend or remove brace components. Do not use household glue.

How much does broken braces repair cost?
The fee depends on the damaged component, the care needed and who provides it. Your existing orthodontic agreement may address repairs, so check with your treating practice.
If attending another clinic, ask for its assessment fee and whether temporary treatment costs extra. Confirm whether any later repair by your usual provider will involve a separate charge.
After temporary treatment
Tell your orthodontic provider what was done and arrange the follow-up they recommend. Ask the treating dentist for a summary if you attended a different clinic.
Before leaving, confirm any changes to your appliance instructions and who to contact if it becomes uncomfortable again.

Do I need an emergency orthodontist?
